Stock Apps Not Working In OS X Mavericks
Lately I’ve been experiencing a problem where the stock apps on my iMac running OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) won’t work at all no matter how many times I restarted my computer.
I’ve searched for a solution to this problem and the only fix I found was reinstalling the OS again which in many cases takes along time especially when you have a poor internet connection like me.
No one exactly knew what was causing the problem so that is what I did, I reinstalled the OS which took more than 4 hours to complete due to my slow internet connection.
Last night I ran into the same problem again and I though I’d search again, maybe someone knows what was causing it and maybe had a fix other than installing the OS again.
And sure enough, someone did find out what was causing the problem and the sweet thing is he had a simple fix.
The answer to this problem comes from a guy named pmcnaon in Apple’s Support Forums and he states that the problem is caused by apps like ‘Clean My Mac’ & other apps that tend to clean your computer from unwanted files.
For some reason, these programs started deleting files that these stock apps needed in order to work correctly; deleting the Base.lproj files out of those stock apps.
The fix is simple. grab a clean copy of the Base.lproj corresponding to the app not working and add it to the desired app to make it work.
Here is a list of Base.lproj corresponding to the stock apps that stopped working after using cleaning apps:
Ibooks complete app: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4956916/OSX/iBooks.zip
After downloading these files, you will need to head over to your applications folder and you need to right click on each app and select “Show Package Contents”
After that you will need to open the “Contents” folder then open the “Resources” folder and place the Base.lproj file corresponding to the app and that should be it.
You problem is now resolved, no need to reinstall the OS
